The world's highest mountain, Mount Everest, is being remeasured. The task will be approached as a collaborative scientific effort from India and Nepal. The exact height of the world's tallest peak has come into question following the devastating 2015 earthquakes in Nepal The first seven attempts on Everest, starting with a reconnaissance in 1921, approached the mountain from Tibet, where a route to the summit via the North Col and North Ridge seemed possible. All were unsuccessful. George Mallory, who spearheaded the first three expeditions, lost his life with Andrew Irvine during a failed ascent in 1924.
The summit of Everest itself is covered by rock-hard snow surmounted by a layer of softer snow that fluctuates annually by some 5–20 feet (1.5–6 metres); the snow level is highest in September, after the monsoon, and lowest in May after having been depleted by the strong northwesterly winter winds. The summit and upper slopes sit so high in the Earth’s atmosphere that the amount of breathable oxygen there is one-third what it is at sea level. Lack of oxygen, powerful winds, and extremely cold temperatures preclude the development of any plant or animal life there. Mount Everest is located in the magnificent Himalaya mountain range. It borders two countries. Its south flank is located in Nepal while north flank is located in Tibet. Due to the special location, there are two main climbing routes on Mount Everest. One is from the southeast ridge in Nepal and the other is from the north ridge in Tibet. The southeast Climbing Routes on Mount Everest route in Nepal was the one used by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, who were the first people to get to the top of Mount Everest in 1953 while the Chinese border was not opened to the western world. Mount Everest is also known by the Tibetan name Chomolangma (Goddess Mother of the Snows), and by the Nepali name Sagarmatha (Mother of the Universe).
