  1. Like Jenny, I was skeptical as I was putting all the ingredients together. I even told my husband I wasn’t sure we’d like it, however, it all comes together amazingly! It is absolutely delicious! Thank you Jenn for another winning recipe!
  2. Can’t wait to make this recipe. When you put the pan in the oven do you leave covered or uncovered? Thanks! (Ps love your site and cookbook).
  3. A delicious recipe although I agree with some others that 1 1/2 T salt is too much. I think less than 1T would still be plenty. I didn't have sweet paprika so used smoked paprika, and left out the jalapeño pepper; it ended up quite spicy with a lovely deep flavor. If you prefer things mildly spiced you will not like this recipe. Because I can't stand any uncooked egg white I finished it in the oven, which worked perfectly. I would absolutely make this again!

This easy shakshuka recipe is a healthy, delicious breakfast or dinner! A bold, spiced red pepper tomato sauce is a fantastic base for runny poached eggs The waitress served my shakshuka in a small, sizzling skillet, as is the custom with most of the local Israeli restaurants. After you’ve eaten the eggs, it’s customary to scoop up the remaining sauce with a piece of fluffy white bread. The bread at Dr. Shakshuka has a light, spongy consistency making it ideal for this purpose. Of course, if you’re watching your waistline, gluten intolerant, or serving for Passover, you can leave out the bread; the dish is also wonderful on its own.Other toppings Laurie recommends include: spinach (for even fresher spinach add at the very end before serving – the warmth will wilt it a little bit), chorizo (cooked of course), asparagus (cooked until bright green in a pan & chopped into bite sized pieces). If adding cheese, add either the last minute while still cooking if you like it a little melty or add at the end if you like it cold & fresh! Skies the limit!

  1. One of the many variations you’ll find is shakshuka with meat in it. If you want to incorporate meat in this recipe, use about 1/2 pound of ground beef or ground lamb. Cook the meat first in a bit of extra virgin olive oil until fully browned, then add it to the shakshuka sauce to simmer along before adding the eggs (see the recipe notes below).
  2. Hi Gary, Yes, I’m guessing your pan is not seasoned enough – a well-seasoned cast iron pan should be able to handle acidic foods. But no need to risk it – stainless steel will work just as well.
  3. Shakshuka is a genius simple dish. You mention that that Shakshuka was brought to Israel by migrants from North Africa. I’d like to note that my family in Palestine has been making this dish for generations long before there was ever a country called Israel and before immigration of North African Jews. It has always been a part of the Palestinian harvest season where they would cook it in a skillet over woodfire in their farms. Thanks.
  4. Thanks so much for your recommendation! It was DELICIOUS!! Once again, your recipe didn’t disappoint. This dish was so flavorful yet simple. Love it!!

I just made this earlier this week for a quick dinner. I followed the recipe exactly and the flavors were to die for! I did have some trouble getting the egg whites cooked thoroughly without the yolks being overdone. I left it on the stove several minutes longer but the whites were still marginally cooked while the yolks were not quite hard. Will definitely make this again but might leave off the eggs because of the cooking difficulty.
