I guess this is where I realize I'm pre-disposed to liking war movies? Outside of Phillip Glass' elevated score, there is nothing here that I haven't seen in countless other "War is Hell" documents, but I definitely “liked” this. The characters are broad and mostly unremarkable, falling somewhere in between the well-drawn soldiers from HBO's "Band of Brothers" and the anonymously annoying men of HBO's "The Pacific". I can't tell if Hamburger Hill wants to be a race movie? It doesn't seem to have a point it wants to espouse except to let people talk about the conundrum of the black soldier fighting for a country that doesn't treat him like a human. But it never makes clear whether it's… Anthony Barrile Michael Boatman Don Cheadle Michael Dolan Dylan McDermott Don James Steven Weber Courtney B. Vance Michael A. Dispensing with much of the good vs evil musings typically found in Vietnam war films, Hamburger Hill settles it's gaze on the men in the middle. A specific platoon, a specific mission, a specific setting...the movie doesn't really have an agenda. It's just a fly on the wall kind of perspective on a particularly grueling piece of a larger puzzle, a sort of lament for the men caught in the middle of a fight they have no stake in. It's violence is brutal, it's imagery is expressive and it's performances are suitable, but the movie felt overlong and just a bit repetitive, weak on character development and narrative progression. It's a grim reminder of the horrors witnessed in Vietnam, and a uniquely grisly depiction of the violence as well. It was also rad to see so many actors getting their big break, like Cheadle, Vance and McDermott. Everyone looked so young.

It doesn't start awfully promisingly, it has to be said, with some dodgy dialogue and some even dodgier performances. But as the film settles down into actually having a purpose, the taking… Video currently unavailable. Hamburger Hill (1987) - IMDb Director: John Irvin. . Part of the 'History in Film' web site. Vietnam war movies are difficult to judge because they are not always told in the standard narrative structure. Often times we follow a group of characters and their transition from place to place rather than from who they are to who they are. Very rarely in Vietnam movies do they ever focus on one person. Hamburger Hill is a 1987 American Vietnam War film starring Courtney B. Vance, Dylan McDermott, Steven Weber, Michael Boatman, Michael Dolan, Don Cheadl Though the anti-war sentiments of Hamburger Hill come through loud and clear, the film is squarely on the side of those courageous, much-maligned Americans who fought and died in Vietnam

It was released around the time when the likes of Platoon, Bat*21, Casualties Of War, Full Metal Jacket and a whole raft of less serious and more action based Vietnam films were being pumped out at a prolific rate. While many of those received widespread plaudits and good box office numbers, Hamburger Hill got left behind somewhat. It really shouldn't have been. Hamburger Hill is a 1987 Vietnam War film that was one of the competing 'Nam movies following 1986's Platoon. This film was released in August of 1987, only a few weeks following the release of Full Metal Jacket and only a few months following Platoon's Academy Award win for Best Picture During the Vietnam War, a platoon of American soldiers have to take a hill, that they eventually dub Hamburger Hill because of how bloody it is. There's a lot of characters and we see them banter off each other. Instead of one lead, it's an ensemble about a group of men and how they react to the war as opposed to the war itself. I know that this is a true story and these were real soldiers, but the film hardly lets you get to know them. By the time the film ends, you barely even know the names of the interchangeable characters.

A lesser Vietnam war epic focusing more on carnage than strategy, John Irvin's "Hamburger Hill" is a capable look at the brotherhood and horror of battle. Following the 14 soldiers of Bravo Company, Irvin's film tells the story the fighting men and their attempt to wrest control of the titular hill from Vietcong control. The narrative examines the uneasy camaraderie of soldiers impacted both by war and events at home and is supported by a production the revels in the blood and mud of war. It is sad, solid stuff. Hamburger Hill probeert ook wel te schetsen wat er zich in de kopjes van de soldaten afspeelt Niet dat Hamburger Hill een geeuwfestijn is. Het tempo ligt hoog en bij momenten gaat het er best heftig.. Just can't go wrong with a war more. This is a realistic one abkut Vietnam. Shows the truth about war. Racism, the loss of people, being a team. Excellent acting. Good action violence. One to remember.

Since Quentin Tarantino is focusing on the year 1969 in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, it just so happened that I came across "Hamburger Hill", the depiction of a battle for Hill 937 (that's 937 meters tall) during the Vietnam War that occurred in May, 1969. It's another of those war film about taking a hill or mountain with no strategic value. Overall, "Hamburger Hill" plays more like "Pork Chop Hill" than "Apocalypse Now" or "Platoon". It's either a film about how an interracial platoon of soldiers become a brotherhood interspersed with combat, or vice versa., but both parts work. The different backgrounds and racial prejudice form a real unique brotherhood as things proceed. Much of the acting is… Want to share IMDb's rating on your own site? hill held by the North Vietnamese, and the faults and casualties they take every time in which the battle was later dubbed Hamburger Hill because..

  1. Why the FUCK have all of John Irvin's films been so severely forgotten.Give this man some credit..He knows how to juggle.
  2. A pretty good film that has the weight of the topic and the plethora of classics that cover the same stuff which hurt this film. A young Don Cheadle and the friendly fire scene were my 2 positive takeaways. Feels hollow.
